The Ontario Works Act was proclaimed and came into effect on June 1, 1998. With this act came many changes to our Social Assistance Program. When you apply for assistance – you apply for both Employment and Financial Assistance. We will discuss your financial need and determine an amount of money that you can receive. We will also discuss your employment history and determine, with you, what would be the best plan to help you return to the workforce. The goal of Ontario Works is to assist people in their shortest route to paid employment. People relying on social assistance must be working towards becoming more employable and finding paid employment. Ontario Works is to be considered the last resort – work is always preferred. Ontario Works is an initiative the Ontario government designed to help Social Assistance Recipients to become job ready and re-enter the work force. The Rainy River District Social Services Administration Board provides access to programs from offices based in Fort Frances and Atikokan.
